BANGKOK, Nov 25 -- Thailand's Ministry of Social Development and Human Security hopes to build a strong society free of violence against children, women, and domestic disputes.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaeo presided over the opening ceremony of this year's event to help eliminate violence against children and women, as well as domestic violence, under the theme, "The Power of Love Can Stop Violence: Start to Stop."

The event took place at Hualampong Railway Station this morning, aimed at making society realise the problem of violence and to encourage relevant agencies to bring about more cooperation to stop all domestic violence in Thailandy.

The minister released two railway carriages adorned with artwork and signs against domestic violence, while passengers on board waved flags saying 'No to Domestic Violence' on both sides of the compartments.

The ministry will send flags to local social development and human security offices nationwide in order to localise the campaign in 1,000 subdistricts as pilot projects.

The minister said he believes that cooperation and coordination between the main office and local offices, together with relevant agencies in each area would help support and create better protection for domestic violence victims, as well as beig able to provide the quickest assistance possible.

The campaign should help local communities realise the gravity of the problem and provide more cooperation to try and stop violence against those who are weaker and to prevent domestic violence from taking place in any homes in Thailand. (MCOT online news)

And maybe some steps towards changing the scripts and storylines in Thai soaps would be a positive, and also how about some real tangible proof that those involved in battery like the hi so chap who was arrested and bailed last week are actually punished harshly, or is that barking up the wrong tree?

Great timing! 2014 is almost over. Does that mean the effort behind the campaign will end when 2015 commences? Let's hope their is a 2015 campaign in there somewhere.

Doesn't matter about the timing.

All these campaigns are just bubbles in the air, suitable only for public consumption.

If they don't start putting behind bars people that are violent against women, children or men nothing will be achieved in 2014, 2015 or ever.

Somebody has to wake up these people and tell them they are not living any more in the medieval times but in the 21st century.

Difficult, but can be done.

More window dressing which will achieve nothing. Thailand has a deep-rooted culture of violence which victimises both sexes, forcing men to be macho and women to be subservient - or else. We see this reflected in the mass media, not least the hugely popular television soap operas, the national religion, business, politics and every other walk of life.

Most worryingly, we see it in Thai schools, where despite laws against corporal punishment having been in force for many years, boys and girls of all ages are routinely assaulted by teachers.

And it is in the schools - not trite little slogans which will be forgotten in a day or two - that Thailand needs to invest if it is to become a less violent and more caring and civilised society.

Lessons on human relationships and sexuality, teaching the sexes to respect each other as equal but different, would be a good starting point. And please, teachers, start sparing the rod. As a role model, your failure to do so will result in the beaten child growing up believing that violence is acceptable.
