A representative for sportswear giant Adidas praised an upcoming minimum wage raise in Cambodia’s garment sector, state media reported yesterday.

Agence Kampuchea Press reported that William Anderson, the regional head of environmental and social affairs for Adidas Group, met with Labour Minister Ith Sam Heng in Phnom Penh last week and applauded the ministry’s effort to stabilise the industry.

Adidas spokeswoman Silvia Raccagni confirmed the meeting was held.

“In all our meetings, we have made it clear that our pricing system is not an impediment to setting higher wages for workers,” Raccagni said in an email.

Ministry spokesman Heng Sour could not be reached.

In a separate meeting, Anderson told labour advocates that the government, not Adidas, is responsible for wage-setting, Anna McMullen of Labour Behind the Label said in an email.
