A cross-boder fruit transporter from Cambodia was charged with trafficking drugs in Thailand on Sunday, police said yesterday.

Chey Vanney, Battambang deputy police chief in charge of drug crackdowns, said Nuon Vandy, 40, was arrested late on Sunday night as he tried carrying some 2,000 methamphetamine pills across the border into Cambodia.

The drugs were allegedly packed into fruit cases that Vandy regularly transports.

“The suspect and evidence was sent to [Thai] police . . . in order to interrogate him,” he said. “Our authorities could not intervene, since it is a serious crime.”

Vandy is from Kampot province, Vanney said, and had been temporarily staying in Battambang, where he was regularly making fruit deliveries through the Doung international border checkpoint.

In May, two Cambodians were arrested in Thailand for allegedly smuggling about 10,000 methamphetamine pills between the two countries.
