Bangkok: Senior police officer's wife arrested for lese majeste

Another advantage of charging them with LM vs other crimes may be the process. Aren't LM charges heard in a closed military court these days? And with very little chance of bail and no right of appeal? Please correct me if I am wrong.

If so, then this is much closer to a purge, rather than a crackdown on corruption...

This is a purge of a particular family, including stripping their name. Maybe they pissed of the wrong people at the wrong time, but they were clearly corrupt and they were using their position and name to effect that corruption. This is a clear case of LM.

Of course, there are probably a heap of other families in the same situation that haven't been "caught".

and the list goes on .........

what a bunch of cheats , crooks and scammers ......

and this is the ' Royal Thai Police ' ..........................................Absolute world disgrace !!!!!!

Government should be completely ashamed for letting this go on so long and so widespread ....

In Thai they are known as the National Police.

The "Royal" was added in 1998 when the English name was changed from the Thai National Police Department, and only exists in the English version.

Have to love these "one size fits all" laws. Purges done with amazing Thailand syle. Hmmm many businesses use term "royal" before name....

They went much further than that.

To an unprecedented level than that.

And that is why they are facing charges.

Many people died in Salem Massachusetts many years ago when only one person need suggest that maybe a person was a witch...no proof was necessary as just the mention of witchcraft was enough to send authorities into a frenzy of activity...

It could be that an overhaul of the Lese Majeste law is in order to discourage and prevent people from using the law to enact unlawful revenge upon an adversary...just saying...

Love the King...but the use of this law appears to be out-of-control...

In this case it appears that its use is quite valid.

One thing is needed, in the police reform; meritocracy. Each and every policeman should be independently tested physically, psychologically, and examined in terms of knowledge of laws, investigations, police procedures etc. All who flunk (probably more than 50%) should either be dismissed or demoted or suspended pending new a final attempt to retake the exams.
