Rubber and rice farmers to receive compensation money faster

BANGKOK, 23 December 2014 (NNT) - The Department of Agricultural Extension (DOAE) has adjusted its procedure on the payment of compensation to rubber farmers, allowing the latter to receive the payment faster. At least 300,000 of them are expected be paid by the end of this year.

DOAE Director General Olan Pitak said there are currently nearly 900,000 rubber farmers who have registered for the financial assistance. Under the scheme, they will receive 1,000 baht per rai in compensation for the declining prices of rubber.

A total sum of 107 million baht has already been paid to 10,388 households via the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC). The DOAE has set to compensate as many as 300,000 farmers by the end of this year.

As for rice farmers, the BAAC has so far distributed 30 billion baht to 2.8 million families. The remaining of around one million others who have been eligible for the money are expected to receive it by the end of December as well.

Not my tax money please. Please stop distribution of my tax dropsy money.

Be nice guys, Bow still has not received the money from the YL rubber compensation scheme yet!

Since the Thai farmers and the Chinese will be financing the railway, one would hope the farmers will get paid in a timely fashion

the loan sharks will be happy to hear this

"compensation for the declining prices of rubber." So a somewhat guarantee for price decline? How about others e.g. car sales, hotels with dwindling customers, hell I think the motorbike repair guy in our village could use some compensation too.

Here's a novel idea: Allow the commodity prices to stabilize on the open market without government intervention so we have actual price discovery.

Remember that this subsidy is in addition to the recent government price guarantee of Bt60/kg while the current market price is Bt35-37/kg. The farmers want Bt90/kg that would give them a 30% profit margin. We have not seen the end of more government concessions on the matter of rubber prices. The Prayuth government has been politicalized!

What about lumyai growers, fruit growers, and just about every other farmer in Thailand. Nice to pick and choose who to waste government money on. Disclaimer: I don't believe in subsidies. Allow the markets to work. Those who profit continue; those who don't fail. But why subsidize failure. <head shake>
