The Japanese Embassy announced yesterday a disbursement of nearly $1.4 million to the international side of the Khmer Rouge tribunal, bringing its total contributions to the court to more than $82 million to date.

“The Government of Japan decided to make this contribution to continue to support the judicial process of the Khmer Rouge tribunal, which attained an important milestone by delivering the verdict against former senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea in August this year, whilst the proceedings of the appeals and a new trial have just begun,” the announcement reads.

With more than $82 million contributed, the Japanese are the court’s largest donors by far, having single-handedly provided some 36 per cent of its total operating budget since the court’s inception, according to court data. The next largest donors are Australia and the United States, which have provided about $23.2 million and $20.8 million, respectively.
