Prawit to meet Hun Sen today

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon led a military delegation to Cambodia for a two-day visit this morning.

Accompanied by the three commanders of the Thai three armed forces, and the Royal Thai Police commissioner, this will be the first time in many years that the country’s military and police top brass have made a visit to Cambodia at the same time.

Before leaving on a military plane from the Air Force’s Sixth Wing base, Gen Prawit said he would meet Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Cambodian deputy prime minister and defence minister Gen Tea Banh and attend the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting to discuss border problems and peaceful co-existence.

There are no hidden agendas in the visit, he said.

Among the delegation are Gen Udomdej Sitabutr, the Army chief, Gen Sirichai Ditakul, the permanent secretary for defence, Gen Worapong Sanganet, the Supreme commander, Adm Krisorn Chansuwanich, the Navy chief, ACM Treetos Sonchaeng, the Air Force chief, and Pol Gen Somyot Phumphanmuang, the police chief.

Hang on a sec... so the Great Orator's in China and Himmler and Goebbels the lesser Uncles are in Cambo... QUICK! Someone snatch the country back!

"... this will be the first time in many years that the country’s military and police top brass have made a visit to Cambodia at the same time."

What is the significance of the police in this meeting?

In September 2014 Gen Thanasak Patimaprakorn, deputy prime minister, foreign minister and Chief of the Defence Forces lead a delegation to Cambodia to discuss cooperation on security, trade and investment, and boost relations.

His delegation included Chief of Joint Staff Gen Sirichai Distakul, Adm Narong Pipattanasai, education minister and navy chief, ACM Prajin Juntong, transport minister and air force chief, Gen Udomdet Sitabutr, deputy defence minister and deputy army chief, and Sihasak Phuangketkeow, permanent secretary for foreign affairs. The parties discussed promoting security, solutions to Thai-Cambodian border problems, cooperation on labour regulation, trade, investment and economic affairs, and exchange of information to prepare the 10th meeting of the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee that Cambodia will host. No police top brass needed then.

What needs to be absolved is the exact border delineation in accordance with the 2013 UN International Court of Justice verdict that the area of the Preah Vihear temple belongs to Cambodia. Thailand stands to lose "a bit of land." Police should have no involvement with this issue.

Well, looking at what the Police Force is in charge of and has divisions for you'll find amongst others

- Border Patrol Police Division, 40,000 people

That should explain why in the preparation of the 10th meeting of the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee also police officers are involved.
