Khao Yai National Park introduces bike lane

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, 25 December 2014 (NNT) – Khao Yai National Park will tomorrow launch its first bicycle lane to promote eco-tourism in natural attractions.

The new bike lane, which is 10 kilometers in length, starts from Sai Sorn Reservoir and ends at Suraswadi Youth Camp, circumventing the park. According to Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) Nipon Chotiban, the bike lane came at the request of park visitors and biking enthusiasts and serves the department’s goal of minimizing engine pollution in the park.

Apart from Khao Yai, the DNP has planned to offer similar bike trails at the rest of national parks throughout the country. The next construction project is expected to be launched at Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai.

Mr Nipon said Khao Yai and other national parks are ready to welcome visitors. Holidaymakers can rest assured of their safety as the number of staff guarding frequently-visited spots during the New Year holiday will be twice the number of staff working on normal days.

Besides, each national park is now equipped with a first-aid unit which can deal with minor injuries or sickness. Helicopters are on standby to transport visitors who suffer serious injuries or illnesses to the nearest hospital.

Regarding park rules, the DNP chief stressed that the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the use of Styrofoam are strictly prohibited at all national parks for the safety of other people and wild animals.

Ban motorbikes altogether, not just big motorcycles. Don't "minimize" - eliminate. How many motorbikers are going to swap their ride for a bicycle? How many cyclists are going to bring a bicycle (a lot, I hope)?

How long before the bike lane is blocked by hundreds of noodle stalls and other food stalls.

A good thing. They should put the bike lanes behind barriers. I was up there a month or so back and the road was blocked by cyclists crawling up the hills 4 wide on the road.

Far more dangerous and annoying than noisy motorcycles.

Off topic a bit, but can anyone personally recommend a farang-friendly, family orientated hotel / resort in Khao Yai National Park area.
