At least two people were killed and 13 others injured after a passenger bus overturned in northwestern Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province on Sunday, a local traffic police chief said.

The ill-fated bus carried Cambodian laborers from capital Phnom Penh to Thai border when the accident took place at around 2:00 a. m. local time, said Suth Hour, chief of traffic police office in Ou Chrov district, where the site is located.

"A man and a woman were killed in the crash as 13 others got injured," said the official.

"Drowsy driving was blamed for the tragedy."

The hapless laborers were returning to Thailand when the accident happened after they came to Cambodia to celebrate the New Year with their families.

Road accidents account for more deaths than landmines, malaria and dengue fever in the Southeast Asian nation.

In 2014, road traffic crashes killed 2,148 people and injured 8, 057 others, according to a National Police's report.
