Drought in Uthai Thani escalated

UTHAI THANI, 25 January 2015 (NNT) – Water levels in main rivers of Uthai Thani province has reached critically low levels due to the drought, affecting commute, tour routes and the livelihoods of the raft community.

The Sakae Krang River in Uthai Thani province continued to suffer a decrease in water levels due to the early drought situation this year, considered the worst in 10 years. Throughout the province's key locations waterways were left dried out with only 20 meters width of watercourse remaining.

Water for consumption and water for agriculture are now under risk of disappearing. Hundreds of house rafts were also severely damaged from the drought, forcing the raft community to crowd together densely.

House rafts owner have to wait for the water levels to rise in order to repair their damaged rafts with the cost expected to be at tens of thousands baht.

Fish farmers are also forced to sell their fish prematurely, while the remaining fish in the fish farm have constantly died due to cold water temperature.

The severe drought situation has also blocked tour route through the Sakae Krang River and commute by boats.

The people of Uthai Thani and the raft community had requested immediate help to solve this problem, as it occurs almost every year.
