BANGKOK: -- Andaman Sea will be proposed as a world's heritage site under a plan by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

This was revealed by its minister Gen Dapong Rattanasuwan.

He said yesterday that he met chief of the natural resources and environment reform committee of the National Reform Council Mr Pramote Maiklad to discuss the direction for the natural resources and environment management and reform.

One of the major topics discussed and agreed was a plan to propose the Andaman sea as a world heritage site.

Currently, the Department of National Parks Wildlife, and Plant Conservation is conducting a feasibility study of the plan, as the previous plan had been conducted a decade ago and was not updated.

According to Gen Dapong, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha is particularly concerned about the livelihood of locals if the Andaman Sea is proposed and registered as a world heritage site.

But there's nothing left in the Andaman Sea to preserve, it's all either dead, dying, sold or eaten!! Another hair brain scheme from the Junta.

Is there nothing Cha-cha-cha doesn't get involved in ?

Dying or dead coral reefs, rapidly diminishing marine species, make-shift garbage dumps behind every other rock or coconut tree, ignorant tourists (both locals and foreigners) adding to the environmental destruction, countless fish trawlers catching what little is left and tipping their trash overboard...

Quite some "world heritage" you have there, indeed!

Too little, too late, as usual.

Maybe Thailand should just protect the Andaman Sea with their one aircraft carrier always tied up to dock or maybe it would justify them buying that "one" submarine they been wanting. Protect it and let it recover versus trying to get someone else to do the job for you.

Sadly an unique area destroyed by human greed, 30 Years to late.

It may come as a surprise to some people that Thailand doesn't own the Andaman Sea.

Anyone taking the trouble to look at a map will see that a vast area is within Burmese waters out towards the Andaman Islands (India) and including the Mergui Archipelago.

Since Burma Myanmar has recently opened more to tourism, it is natural that their waters around the vast collection of Mergui islands hopefully haven't been used and abused as much as Thailand's.

Perhaps people familiar with the diving etc in these waters might comment.

I am sure the Andaman Sea area around Phuket and the Phi Phi islands etc, has been seriously affected by intense tourism over the years.

I wonder if Myanmar is also proposing their Andaman Sea as a World Heritage Site? Or is this a Thai thing?

How weird. 50% of the Andaman Sea in Malaysian territory. Maybe they should call their neighbor?

"the previous plan had been conducted a decade ago and was not updated"

Thais seem to moving toward action at the speed of dark on this one, being another one of thousands.....

Not quite, that would be the Malacca Straits. As I said earlier Myanmar claims a large percentage of the Andaman.up to the Gulf of Martaban.

Better late then never, Maybe by declaring it a Heritage site it will have the chance it needs to revive.

If designated as a world heritage site, will Thailand remove all its oil offshore platforms from the sea? I don't think so. Ocean Wolrd would have a better chance at designation.
