Prayut calls for understanding from farmers

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha called for understanding of his government's attempt to assist farmers and urged them to group as cooperatives and get ready for change for their better living.

Forming cooperatives or associations to work together will strengthen their positions to cope with any circumstances, he said during his “Returning Happiness to the People” programme Friday night.

Gen Prayut said his government was doing all it could to help farmers and would like them to understand what it was doing.

As for the rubber farmers who are coming out to oppose government attempt to help them shoring up prices, Gen Prayut said they should understand the situation and try to adapt themselves.

He asked rubber farmers to think and not just to protest any new new measure rolling out to help them on a sustainable basis.

They should form their own groups or cooperatives to strengthen themselves and ready to face any change

He also cautioned activist farmers to be careful not to bring in trouble or else they should be held responsible for any consequence.

He said all steps taken to remedy and ease their plight were transparent.

He said not only in Thailand rubber farmers have trouble but also in many countries, and China also faced price fall problems which remained unresolved.

He cautioned former politicians to mind their words in making threat to protest, to use violent mean, or rallies or even saying reconciliation could not proceed.

He said he would consider such threat an act of terrorism and he had instructed security authorities to monitor and tape everything to take legal action instantly.

He said what the government would do was not to deprive freedom of expression but would consider that such expression was detrimental to national security.

This should not be considered as a threat, It is a statement. The thorn is slowly being removed from our country, any sign of infection should be treated immediately, once its out the wound will heal quickly.

Who the hell did you work for? Pravda?

The thorn of farmers in poverty? Sounds positively shameful.

+1 you forgot to add "our country" whistling.gif

Maybe he's talking about lifting martial law and having elections. Then stuff can get on with healing.

Reading some of the previous comments made me laugh. A long time TVF member recently told me that the forum was like therapy for some. Lots and lots of meaningless words that somehow made them feel better, even though they meant nothing and made no difference whatsoever to Thailand.

I look at forum comments in a different light now and fully understand why some posters never seem to get too serious, and keep their comments lighthearted.

Makes a lot of sense now.

Keep them comin' ! clap2.gif

So you are somehow blaming the present administration for the plight of the farmers ?

After all the nonsense posted till now let's return to the OP which has

"Forming cooperatives or associations to work together will strengthen their positions to cope with any circumstances, he said during his “Returning Happiness to the People” programme Friday night."

Seems very good advise. I understand rice farmers in Isaan who work like that earn more than those who had to rely on middlemen.

Don't be afraid to use subsidies to help the farmers. It's not a bad word as some has made out to be for political reasons. There will always be more farmers and peasants than the tax payer educated citizens and when push to the limit of poverty will be difficult to contain. All countries in the world with a large agrarian economy provide subsidies. Just spend bit less on military budget and channel to subsidies.

A lot of warnings!

He's got the power.

I would heed the warnings.

Can't say he didn't warn you!

Good advice to heed the warnings. Hes a dangerous man. He will have to bat a little cautiously, too heavy handed and he will unleash the monster. I just hope no country gives him a sanctuary

He seems good at threatening everyone except for the small few that he actually works for.

There seems to no end to the complete asinine statements coming out daily now.

In his spiel Friday past he suggested that the rice farmers who can't plant a second crop because of drought plant something else. As you say, there seems to be no end. Anyone for cactus?

You must not live in an agricultural area of Thailand.

Cassava grows just fine without irrigation.

That is exactly what Thai farmers are doing now....planting cassava.

Added benefit..there has been no cassava scam!

The farmers need to grow something that makes them a profit, and has a stable market price, but I'm sure the Junta also promised a rice price that would profitable, which of course is one of the reasons behind Yinglucks demise, so if the Junta fails to deliver on their promises, who has the cohones to hold any of them accountable?

Report to the junta immediately, for attitude adjustment.

Well, actually the subsidy promised by PM Prayut was fairly limited with no guarantee of a profit.

"Under the short-term remedy scheme, a household of farmers owning not more than 15 rai of farmland will receive 1,000 baht as subsidy from the government as farming cost. For those who have over 15 rai, the maximum payment is capped at 15,000 baht subsidy."
