Lite Beer Posted February 6, 2015 Share Posted February 6, 2015 Bt20m given to back Myanmar's anti-drugs effortsThe Nation THAILAND'S anti-narcotics agency has given Bt20 million to Myanmar's counterpart body under a joint agreement to fight rampant drug abuse in both countries.A ceremony to sign the pact and hand over the money was held at the Office of the Narcotics Control Board yesterday, with Myanmar's national police chief participating as head of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control.The agreement was approved by the Cabinet on January 13.The government has also agreed in principle to grant similar funding to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam in the near future.Thailand and Myanmar have set up a joint operations centre in Chiang Mai to combat drug trafficking and dealing in the region connected by the Mekong River including Myanmar and Laos.An ONCB office is based at |the Thai Embassy in Myanmar and its operates extensively in conjunction with general anti-drugs operations.It is currently working with the Chiang Mai operations centre. Because it lies on sovereign Thai soil, ONCB would be staffed solely by Thai citizens and its access by Myanmar is restricted, not subject to examination any 3rd party from Thailand or any other foreign organization.
