crazygreg44
they complain that they have to sit in the sand. No deckchair, no Umbrella. It is in the wee hours of the early morning (as you can see by the shadows) b ut I doubt that for the rest of the day their problem will get solved. Mr. General, your plan was good but your employees are not capable of doing a proper job.
Popular Post Old Croc
Funny how people from Australia, the Americas, Africa and most of Asia can manage to sit on a beautiful sand beach without looking like a beaten soi dog. I lived close to a beach in Australia (Scarborough), spent a large part of my life on the beach, yet never sat on a sunbed until I had to at Patong. Whining tourists looking for a sunbed to save for later with their towels. Perhaps they should head to a lovely North Sea beach for their next holiday.

WitawatWatawit
So, Thailand is kaput and you may not return again - because of a deckchair. Mother of mercy! Are people really that thick? Do they not "feel" the more natural environment around them and appreciate it? I'll bet these people think spending a night in a casino playing slots is really cool.

LivinginKata
I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. Over the years I have conversed with an older Italian gentleman who I met on our daily morning walk along Kata beach. Had not seen him since early last year, and i chanced to see him yesterday. He was enthusing about the beach at Kata, took me several minues to realise that he was refering to the absense of the chairs. I enquired if he did not miss the service of chairs, umbrella, and drinks. He said, no problem, bought a chair & umbrella, quite happy. Noidea if he will be told to remove his chair on Kata beach. I am not a beach person (grew up on one) but if I were I'd rather sit on the sand than in a chair that has the sunscreen and sweat of the 872 previous occupants permanently soaked into it

In any of those places are they prevented from bringing their own ?? Possibly not. But in my experiences very few needed to do so. However, my point was more about the tourists "It's the End of the World" attitude to having to sit on the sand. I think this total ban is about stopping greedy vendors from stealthily regaining their patch of sand, for personal commercial purposes. They started off by renting and selling gear from off the beach, but quickly moved back on to it. Unchecked, it would have been all back to square one. I think it will take at least a year for them to all slink away into other rip off enterprises, and sanity can return. I think it will take at least a year for them to all slink away into other rip off enterprises, and sanity can return. Australian beaches are much like the rest of Australia, over regulated and over policed. Example, you may be able to bring a chair and unbrella to the beach, but start kicking around a football and the lifeguards will be onto you as fun is prohibited on beaches. Dogs are not allowed at almost all beaches in Australia. Bringing a dog to the beach is like bringing a pork chop into a Synagogue. You will have several council rangers onto you within seconds. They are normally regects from other government departments and love saying 'I am just doing my job' whilst writing you a $350 ticket for a trivial offence. Try buying an ice cream for your family on the beach in Australia. Its normally a 3 kilometer walk, and by the time you get back the ice creams are melted. 1 smart bloke in Sydney started selling ice creams from his run about in the inner harbour beaches. So punters would have to swim out to get ice creams, because if he stepped on the beach and showed a bit of initiative and actually tried to earn a living the council rangers would be all over him like a pitbull on a poodle. Beer on the beach...the quickest way to have armed police rock up to the beach with dozens of lifeguards in tow, is for someone to open a can of beer. Imagine getting a massage on an Australian beach by an Asian woman? There would be a crowd of hysterical 40 something year old women kicking sand in your face. Even if you are a proficient surfer or swimmer you will have the over zealous, self important life guards hounding you on where you can or cannot swim. I wished I could sign a waiver when I used to go to the beach. A kind of leave me the f...k alone document to keep these idiots away from me. Can you imagine the uproar in Australia if you had people being dragged behind a boat on a plastic bannana? The occupational health and safety uni gradiates wouldhave a field day, it would be on the front page of the newspaper......allthough they are not well run in Phuket, the idea of having jetskis appeals to a lot of people. In Australia you have to do a 2 day course and $500 just to ride one. They are banned just about everywhere, for what? Because of the fun police and OH&S 'experts'. Give me Thai beaches any day, dogs running around, families having fun, you can buy food and beer or get a massage without a second glance, and without several different government departments hounding you. You actually have a lot more freedom in Thailand, all these people up in arms about new laws and regulations should take a look at Australia. Its actually more of a police state and more over regulated than Singapore now.

NamKangMan
It's 2015. When will Phuket grow up???? These two videos are an embarrassment to the tourism industry here. Who could blame these people if they never return to Phuket again? Treated like criminals for having a beach chair on their hotel. The whole system of Governance and law enforcement is broken on Phuket, with no fix in sight. Edited February 16, 2015 by NamKangMan

Rightly or wrongly its an expected service, especially so in the most developed beach areas.. Everywhere else in Thailand where tourists are this is provided, if Phuket chooses not to, it will have an effect on the peoples choice to come there. As to 'slink off in a year'.. Theres money in it.. The first hint of lax enforcement and it will be back.. Its not like they are going to stop trying to make money.

LivinLOS
Todays rule from the Governor is its ok.. This mornings (or possibly yesterdays) video is it wasnt ok.. Last weeks was it was ok... And no one would be arrested.. But thats just for chairs.. Umbrellas are less clear.. theres vague statements about new rules restricting them to 10% of the beach.. in clearly defined roped off spaces that dont yet exist... But this will change tomorrow... LivinLOS
Just realized in the comedy of above.. In the news piece he slams the police, for saying you cant take chairs on the beach, then 'clarifies' it by saying "Tourists can bring mats, cloths or cushions [and place them] outside the 10 per cent zoning area where umbrellas are allowed." Which doesnt include chairs !!! Also does that mean they must place them outside the 10% or 'can' place them outside the 10%..

bubblegum
Don't care if you're an expat living here and in love with mother nature, plenty of it still in Phuket. Get of your F$%^ as and find it. Why would tourist and others who like a bit of luxury and entertainment have to suffer from your opinion? It's the same all around the world, everything that is slightly funny, fun to have, fun to do or just plain fun is looked upon as being anti social, bad for the environment and so on. But you're forgetting that driving a hybrid car does not help the world. Since the beach shit my lady cannot convince me anymore to have a nice day at the beach simply because I cannot sit on the sand and that's a old age/medical problem. And @ Old Croc, you might be blessed with the typical Aussie health and muscular body, most of us are not.

I agree. However, if the motive of the recorder were to pressure The General into conceding to the beach vendors, it's possible "loss of face" may come into play, and on that basis, the recorder may have done more harm than good, to their cause.
