British consul talks emergency planning with Pattaya mayor

PATTAYA:--British Consul Michael Hancock discussed ways to improve service to UK expats, especially in cases of emergencies, during a meeting with Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome.

Up to a half-million Britons visit Pattaya each year, so the British embassy based Hancock in the city. He met with Itthiphol Feb. 10 to get to know more about the town, build a good relationship between the consulate and city hall, exchange cultural information, and learn about the tourist safety initiatives from Pattaya and the Tourist Police.

Hancock said he also wanted to gain a better understanding of the city’s roles in contingency planning, data access and operations in an emergency event, such as natural disasters, land or water transport accidents, or a disease outbreak.

Itthiphol said he discussed policies that provide assistance to British tourists or residents in an emergency and looked to elevate cooperation between the city and embassy on issues of crime, illness, accidents, or disaster.

The British consular delegation also visited the Tourist Police, the Marine Department, and Immigration Police to discuss cooperation.

"in an emergency event, such as natural disasters, land or water transport accidents, or a disease outbreak."

To me a emergency event such as a suicide bomber walking into a Brit bar would be closer to home. They just have to have a look at what procedural inadequacies and stuff-ups occurred after the Bali bombings.

Why waste time with a meeting about 'Emergencies'. Talk is cheap. How about a proper Consular service like we had before in soi 5 Jomtien?

Too obvious an answer!
