Govt job ratings, economic skills top Yingluck, Abhisit
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Prayut government's six-month job approval rating in economic performance was a little above half of a total score, according to Bangkok Poll results released yesterday.

The poll was conducted among 66 economists from 28 institutions between February 9 and 17. The poll results showed the government received 5.62 on the score of 10 - higher than that of the Yingluck government, which scored 4.08, and higher than that of the Abhisit government, which scored 5.12.

The government received the highest score of 6.51 from its performance on baht management and managing the stability of the baht and received the lowest score from managing the country's macro economy (GDP) with a score of 5.19.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's job approval rating scored at 6.62 out of 10 which is higher than that of former prime-minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who got 3.66. Energy Minister Narongchai Akrasanee's performance rating was 6.15, followed by Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula 6.07. The lowest score went to Commerce Minister Chatchai Sarikulya 5.2, while Bank of Thailand governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul scored highest with 7.54, higher than a previous poll in which he received 7.11.

Asked if the PM should have a Cabinet reshuffle, 34 per cent said "yes" because current ministers were not experts in their jobs and approached work like bureaucrats, lacking new ideas and vision. Another 21 per cent said "yes" because progress was slow, their approach to work was more passive than proactive, and they did not work in cohesion and compatibility.

Around 21 per cent of those polled said Prayut should not reshuffle the Cabinet to allow policies to be carried out with consistency, 44 per cent said the Cabinet reshuffle was not needed because the government had little time to carry out its road map as announced, and 44 per cent of the surveyed economists did not answer this question.

I would really like to know just where they get these people who are so knowledgeable about the inner workings of the gov. So much in fact that they can answer a poll like this.

Most Thais culture has taught them not to ask questions. This is taught while in school. So any poll that asks Thai people about details such as these would have to be faked.

"The government received the highest score of 6.51 from its performance on baht management"

What baht management?

Whether the Junta has had any responsibility for the strengthening of the baht against Russia, China, and the EU currencies is debatable. Howvere, what is not debatable is that Thai exports have become much more expensive to these countries that will further slow Thai exports. Considering exports contribute 70% to Thailand's GDP, that is a disaster. And while the baht has weakened against the US dollar (as did much of the rest of the world), the Junta seems on a deliberate path to disengage the USA as a primary trading partner.

From the first day of the coup Gen. Prayuth has committed not to increasing Thailand's debt, blaming previous elected administrations for being irresponsible for funding social and populist programs through debt.

Unfortumately, the whole of Thailand's business sectors as well as international economic experts have repeatedly called on the Junta to make massive government investments in Thailand's infrastructure as a means to stimulate GDP growth. That requires borrowing through treasury bonds. Gen. Prayuth has refused and the economy now borders on deflation. Of all the Asian economies, Thailand now stands as the weakest and most vulnerable to further instability.

How is any of these failures a sign of effective baht management?

Best government ever

I think so too. No riots, no violent demonstrations. No blocking roads, no arson. Safe to go about one business. Nice uncluttered beaches.

The only people really unhappy are the politicians and government officials who have been deprived of corruption income. The tourists are coming back. The economy is doing better than most countries.

The way that management skills are deployed here is interesting.

Perhaps the score comes from the fact that the government are used to resource management- have successfully run an army for a number of years.

Evaluating resources, tasking subordinates to do their work and respecting their conclusions.

Removing the strata that siphoned off a percentage of available funds for personal gain.

Western governments love to boast about how they run the country like a business, and the gains they make should be shared by the people that made them happen. The austerity measures implemented when times are less successful however, are to be borne by the mass of the country.

Economies are difficult to manage, difficult to predict and difficult to steer, because of the worldwide factor. Reforming Thailands economic system to eradicate corruption and maintain a healthy outlook takes a lot of work. I'd Imagine its akin to herding cats.

Respect to a manager who knows how to task a team and keep them focused.
