Chinese tourists in CM; same in Korea, unwanted by many.

Featured Replies

Just read this in NYT and found it very much like the situation in Chiang Mai these days. In CM lately we see hordes of chinese tourists crowding the temples, haggling over restaurant prices (after eating the meal), driving like madmen on motobikes and bicycles, buying up the choice properties, crossing the streets 'en masse' like herds of wildebeasts, urinating and other personal functions more or less 'ad lib'on the street or otherwise, dis-respect of local tradition and culture all leading to whether the business and community wide welcome-mat put out for the chinese, and their money, are making only a few folks rich while the rest of us sweep up after them.

Now, to my surprise the very same thing is happening on the small Korean island of Jeju; a chinese invasion and potential take-over of the society. Korea also offers retirement visas, foreign ownership of condos, things like that so it is a very popular place.

The behavior on the roads is astonishing. Saw one yesterday stopped in the middle of a major intersection on a motorbike, clueless that he was supposed to proceed, because when he turned right he was now staring at a red light. And that's minor compared to the stunts they're pulling. People walking directly into traffic.

Not a big deal, but yesterday I was at the dentist office, a couple of older birds plowed right in and went straight in to the dentist who was in the middle of a procedure, instead of speaking with the woman at the front desk first.

It's been talked about a bit in the Chiangmai sub forum http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/802453-chinese-pedestrians/

And I bet the dentist didn't do anything about it.

We can learn from the Chinese.

The news article is not Thai related, if you wish to discuss what's happening in Chiang Mai, you can use the Chaing Mai forum.
