Eleven people were tested in raids on four karaoke bars, nine tested negative and two tested positive.

PHUKET: -- 64 people were tested for drugs yesterday (March 9) after Phuket Governor, Nisit Jansonwong and Thalang District Chief, Veera Kerdsirimongkol led officials to carry out an anti-drug campaign in Thalang district. Eight of those tested had drugs in their system.

At 5:30pm Gov Nisit, Mr Veera, city officials, police and Health Department officials first went to check on a work camp on Moo 6 in Cherng Talay.

The team were checking for human trafficking, illegal foreign workers and also the worker̕s living conditions.

The health department randomly gave nine Thai workers drug tests, all of which came back negative.

Officials also gave one man who drove past the work camp a drug test, the result of which came back positive. The man admitted that he had recently taken ya bah.

Later, at 9:30pm, Mr Veera ordered a group of Thalang volunteers to check to set up a security check point near the Old Airport Rd in Mai Khao and to stop and check all incoming and outgoing vehicles, and to conduct random drug tests.

43 people tested negative for drugs at the check point while 5 tested positive. The five all admitted to using either ya bah or ya ice and were willing to receive drug treatment.

Then, at 11:30pm, officials raided four karaoke bars in Mai khao and Thepkasattri. Nine people tested negative for drugs and two tested positive.

The two admitted to taking ya bah and said that they wanted to receive treatent for their addiction.

Officials stressed to restaurant owners and operators that their bars must close as stipulated by the law and that they should ensure their venues are free from drugs, human trafficking, prostitution and child labour.

Put them in prison and let them have rehabilitation treatment there.

Who are they kidding?

Or the police are so naive as to believe them?

If you are addicted on drugs there is no rehabilitation for you.

Just excuses to get away..........

He confirms it with every post he makes

Unreasonable search and seizure? Not in Thailand.

oh jeez, thousands of addicts get and stay clean or sober every year. its small minded individuals like you who treat a health problem as a criminal problem that perpetuate the suffering. get a grip

Should test the Police.

There not going to waste an opportunity to mention Human Trafficking are they.

Police at Patong were checking on illegal sunbeds and Human Trafficking..... Well I made that up, but?

Wonder when they move to full moon party for testing sure gets better result.

Why have they confused recreational drug use with crimes such as child slave labour and people trafficking? Why have they lumped them all together? I have never met a people trafficker nor a child labourer exploiter, but most of my friends and a lot of my family enjoy getting high sometimes. The war on drugs is a war on the people in any country and is a yardstick of the primitive nature of the legal system. Forcing people to give biological samples is outrageous unless there is a genuinely serious crime involved. The anti drug laws are a 'gateway law' to corruption.

While I agree the chances of them actually wanting rehab is low what exactly is locking them up going to do? people like you never come up with a solution merely lock them away so you don't have to worry about them. Coming from a Greek I find the irony somewhat amusing.

Good start, guys. But this is a move that is supported by the army. When an election comes and the corrupt politician scum (of whichever party) return to power all of these positive moves will be abandoned and forgotten, unfortunately.

On what are you high now ?

Because nobody can say so stupid things without taking drug, right ?

Punitive mean minded, and illogical actions. Sad Thailand.
