Pattaya Beach takes brunt of tropical storm damage

PATTAYA:--Perhaps the worst of the damage during March 24’s freak thunderstorm was inflicted on Pattaya Beach, where runoff cascaded off the promenade and cut huge gouges in the already-eroded beachhead.

Floodwaters from the tropical storm flowed steadily from east to west, turning Beach Road and the adjacent sidewalks into a briny infinity pool where it was impossible to see where the street ended and beach began.

At Soi 6 in North Pattaya, the steps leading from stage area became a waterfall, cutting out trenches in the sand as the floodwater strained to return to the sea.

Barriers, pavements, and footpath bricks all were damaged by erosion and the force of the water. A large creek was created along beach outlets by the paths that the floods took as well, causing massive impacts for beach umbrella and deckchair vendors.

Pattaya Beach between sois 1 and 5 was worst hit, sending Pattaya officials scrambling for an emergency budget to repair the area. Sidewalks were wrecked and large trees were stripped to the roots by the raging waters, causing tourists to flee the area believing the trees would fall.

Engineering Department workers installed four water pumps at Soi 6 to ease the flooding. Two pumps also were put in at Central Festival Pattaya Beach and another one near the entrance of Walking Street.

because as everywhere else in this beautiful country:quality construction work;built to last forever....

Can I say "I told you so"? That new walkway was badly designed, badly built and the result is plain to see. It's not like there hasn't been a tropical storm hitting Pattaya before.

I haven't seen any of the usual suspects that were lauding the new walkway coming out to defend it recently, 55555555555.

What's the bet they rebuild it exacly the same, setting up for the "next time"?

I like the post-apocalyptic carnage

Kinda reminds me of the Corniche in Mogadishu...

Just like most things here ,very little thought goes into anything ,except maybe how much they will make.

isnt there a saying about how water can go uphill in Thailand? Ive just watched the neighbours house get reroofed, they have done quite a good job but his house is going to get flooded when the next big rain comes. despite their obvious experience they were unable to think thru where the water is going to go

unable to think thru

Sadly, that seems to be a Thai trait. They built a brand new 7 11 near where I live with ZERO parking, so everyone parks in the road, and it's only a two lane road anyway.
