Govt approves sticky rice growing program for farmers

BANGKOK, 3 April 2015 (NNT)-The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has endorsed a new scheme aimed at improving the quality of Thai sticky rice.

According to the Deputy Minister to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Amnuay Patise, 40 sticky rice farmers will be selected from each of the districts in 15 provinces, most of which are in the Northeast.

Under the scheme, they will be encouraged to dedicate 25% of their rice field to sticky rice growing. It is expected that more than 10,000 rais will be used in growing the crop.

They will be monitored over a period of 3 years. Results from the observations will be collected and stored in the database.

The farmers will receive advice and tips on how to increase their productivity while lowering the costs of production. 95% of sticky rice produced annually in Thailand is for domestic consumption and the rest of 5% for export.

The rice is commonly grown in the North and Northeast of the country. As much as 5-8 million tons of sticky rice is produced in these regions each year. Thailand is the world’s leading sticky rice exporter.

pete and repeat must be the two most common actions the governments of the world can be depended on.. thailand does seem to be striving to be a hub again, not sure if they misplace all the info presented in the past or they just cannot find their ar.. with either hand

sure wish we could get some serious/useful news published and a sense of real accomplishment would give a lot of kick start where needed, wonder if anyone has spent valiable time taking a count of the number of different outfits worn each day. between makeup, color cornonators, poswising for photo etc its tough to get in a good days work. about 2 to 3 hours may be a guesstimate to appearance time, would not venture ''task completed''

Sticky rice - the number one cause of diabetes of people in the provinces.

Here is Sakon Nalhon it is 80% sticky rice and the 20% in Thai rice.

My FIL produced last year 7 tons of sticky rice and only 20% of normal rice.

He is going to harvest next week again but not that much this time as they shut down the water.

I love sticky rice. You have my full support. My favorite dish is sticky rice with mango, mmmmmm.

Is it really? I would love to see the figures (genuinely) can you please provide them or a link to them. Thanks

I eat it often what is the problem is it the rice or is it cooked with lots of sugar?

It would.all depend on the variety of the sticky rice being consumed.....all rices dont fall on the same point on the glycaeimic index....the amylose content decides that. Some sticy rice is very high orhers are low..

It's the rice type.

Carbohydrates would all be converted into sugar upon digestion. Question is how much.

It's also down to how the carbs are delivered to the blood. Rice in general is bad (except brown rice) for diabetes, it's the second worst food after sugar. Rice delivers the carbs almost like a "carb-bomb) in one goe and really spikes blood sugar levels and then is done. It's why people are hungry again 30 minutes later after rice.

All of these refer to the higher GI being less desirable in diabetes management but the post says it is the main cause of diabetes. Any data on that?

The high GI of sticky rice would make eating a bowl of it equal to consuming over 20 teaspoons of sugar in one meal, without counting the added sugar when eaten as dessert.

And we know diabetes is the result of prolonged high sugar consumption.
