NRC's justice reform committee calls for independent national criminal investigation bureau

BANGKOK, 29 April 2015 (NNT) - A National Reform Council committee in charge of the reform of the justice system has called for the setting up of a new agency that will independently investigate all criminal cases.

The NRC’s committee on the reform of law and justice system on Tuesday proposed to the main council meeting its study of the police affairs, which suggested that the Royal Thai Police has been operating with total centralization.

The committee pointed out that such a work style will have quite an impact on the people and the society.

Therefore, it has been brainstorming ideas about a reform process that will really benefit the public before coming up with a 15-point plan, which includes such issues as the independence of the police force, the transfer of some authority to promote decentralization and the setting up of inspection mechanisms for the police.

One key point under this plan is the reform of the investigation process, which the committee believes should be more independent from the Royal Thai Police — an idea it would like the Constitution Drafting Committee to include in the new charter and draft an organic law to set up a national criminal investigation bureau.
