Thailand’s Lottery Distribution System to be Overhauled in June

Featured Replies

Thailand will be overhauling their lottery distribution system in June. The change will put a stop to monopolies in the industry and lower ticket prices down from the standard 80 baht per ticket.

The Government Lottery Office (GLO) was ordered by prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to overhaul the system. Brokers are selling tickets for too high a price to brokers. According to the GLO, there are five groups of people that control the distribution of lottery tickets to all vendors in the country.

Many brokers have been accused of buying tickets from smaller brokers and reselling them to other retail vendors at higher prices. This monopoly has caused retail vendors to mark up the price of lottery tickets substantially.

While there is no set price as a result of the upcoming overhaul just yet, the GLO suggests that the price of lottery tickets may be as low as 70 baht per ticket instead of the 80 baht standard seen today.

The government also has plans to use revenue earned through the ticket sales to buy back unused tickets from vendors.

Any brokers that are caught abusing the system after the overhaul will now face legal consequences. The goal of the overhaul is to help lottery ticket profits expand to all vendors not just the select few brokers that control distribution.

Maybe It's a start, from those famalies who've sewn up import rights to sundry agents and intermediaries across the board making prices higher and turning simple deals into unnecessarily convoluted arrangements and adding absolutely no value.....lots of middlemen, very little middle way...

In the meanwhile, yesterday saw vendors at Onnut, Saphan Kwai and Pakerd all selling tickets at between Bt 110 and Bt 130 claiing that they were shortage of tickets!!!! what bullshit!

Use proper lottery computerized system...You select the number, you pay then it print out.. No hassle of buying back printed tickets, no need create another dept to take care of buy back printed tickets, resolve middlemen, guarantee over pricing, people happ, can buy any number they like and government happy all under control.. Those poor or disable can be employed to mend the counter and operate the lottery dispensing machine to process the lottery tickets, similar like buying taxi or bus fare.. Too easy?
