Two farang arrested for extorting from French businessman in Pattaya

Also, why did ThaiVisa news have to use the headline "Two Farangs arrested..." ? Couldn't they have said "Russian and Brit arrested for extorting..."? I really don't like the use of the term "farang" by the media, especially our own media, when the nationality of the people under discussion is known.

Agree with you. It appears 3 times in the top 5 headlines, probably from this new "churnalist" who's been recently hired

Just wonder, are the words "slope", "chinks", "seppos", "negroes" ... also acceptable ?

For complete list : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs

Farang is not on that list of ethnic slurs because it is not an ethnic slur, it is akin to calling people caucasian or asian etc.

it does however appear here in the Oxford Dictionary: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/farang

You might care to note the definition, there being no mention of it being a slur, that is because it isn't a slur.

By the way, negroe is acceptable, did you think that was a slur as well?

It's odd that the French businessman would go straight to Immigration to report the crime rather than the police.

It looks to me like the Frenchman went to the right police department i.e. Immigration albeit not straight away but I think it could be inferred from the way the piece is presented that Thais are good, farangs are bad and French businessmen are victims. The term 'farang' is being used detrimentally here. I think the idea is to make sure nobody is under the impression that the accused are Thais so you've got Thais, who aren't there, farangs (the accused) and a Frenchman (the victim). 'Farang' is also used (in the heading) in the singular as opposed to the plural as in 'a brace of pheasant', the 'brace' being the singular item.

So what are we looking at, 'a brace of farang' being charged with extorting money from and robbing a farang. What more is there to the story? Was he 'set up' by the accused in order for them to 'get something on him' or did he inadvertently reveal himself as someone in need of 'help and protection'!? Either way it looks like it's 'come on top' for the villains of the piece, if so you gotta feel sorry for the Frenchman and proud of him for turning the villains in.

It does say a russian and a brit, stop being racist, so a non farang is obviously a thai. Why do u hate thais so much????

To get back on topic a certain well known American and his legal business arranged this arrest.

The same person who is himself on bail for extortion and blackmail.

You are saying the accused arranged his own arrest?

No he is saying one of the people arrested was set up by the most credible american ever to make Thailand his home,a well known shyster and walt mitty who even advertises his fake law office in the divorce forum of thai visa.

The people in prison are there because of a foreign owned legal business who played a major role in their arrest.

The owner and one of his girlfriends are on bail for extortion and blackmail.

Out on bail despite doing the police perp picture with all the cash in from the 7 million demanded from the clinic boss.

Meanwhile these two minor players are locked up for a small sum.

I am surprised the guy behind their misfortune is still happy to hang around.

wannabe gangsters now its their turn to be extorted...

Mate if thai embassys and immigration would do some decent background checks of al the foreigners obtaining visas to travel to Thailand....even known child seks offenders get visas to travel to the kingdom.

Thailand is a safe haven for criminals and apparently some foreign embassys keep on giving passports to individuals risiding in Thailand known to be involved in heavy crime but are protected by data protection act laws in their countrys of origin and are now posing as upstanding members of society in those English <deleted> rags in pattaya.

Technically such people are not allowed to enter Thailand.

man...hope you're not equating the acceptability of the word farang(s) with chink(s). they're not even remotely comparable.

This is not the thread to discuss the issue of the word farang but if you ask me I find it on a par with words like chink and froggie to describe someones nationality,

If some of you want to discuss it start a new thread but please do not hijack this one.
