Meningococcal case sparks health scare
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A 63-year-old company chauffeur in Ubon Ratchathani has succumbed to meningococcal meningitis a serious bacterial disease that disappeared from this northeastern province two decades ago.

An investigation team was sent in to trace the transmission route, while the man's 19 close contacts were treated with medication and put under surveillance, Dr Suraporn Loyha, a public health officer, said yesterday.

The Nam Yeun district native, was hospitalised on Sunday. After tests confirmed the disease, health authorities were alerted on Monday.

Officials would monitor the situation for three to four days for any more cases, he said.

This disease is curable if medicated in time.

Why did it take a whole day to notify health authorities???????? Should have taken only a few very few hours at the most.

Can't be too much of a scare to Thailand, sensationalist reporting again. A South African policeman died on Phuket on May the 5th of "died as a result of “cerebral edema and bleeding under meninges” - inflammation to the brain caused by meningitis. Not reported here but picked up in the South African papers.

Guess farangs don't count as statistics, but this disease does not discriminate, everyone is at risk.

is it contagius? if yes => bus driver => touches many things, cough on everything, no mask off course...

Meningitis is contagious. It can be spread by coming into contact with an infected person's respiratory secretions.
