I think I now have a google voice account and I opened it from Thailand. Don't ask me exactly how but I think I verified an American phone number that I managed to find through a text service and clicked on it at the right time.

I did this because I read about it in another topic and because it was difficult to do from Thailand.

Now that I have it, what is so great about a Google Voice account? What can I do with it? And what kind of number should I pick? Because if I don't do it right the first time the second number I think costs me $10 bucks.

Yes I know it rings all of my numbers at the same time and I do have a lot of numbers but do I want a Thai or American area code on the master number?

See Google Voice : What's New

Google Voice is great for receiving and making free calls to/within the United States and some parts of Canada.

Calls can be automatically forwarded to ring up to 5 pre-selected US mobile or landline telephones at once, and/or automatically forwarded to Google Hangouts app running on a PC or Smartphone connected to the Internet anywhere in the world.

(Incoming calls cannot be forward to an International number)

Make international calls (outside US and Canada) for low rate based from your Google Voice number for low fee.

Once you have the account set up and have selected a US number you can then

have incoming calls automatically forwarded to any preselected US phone number and/or voicemail

have SMS and voicemail forwarded to an email address

have voicemail automatically transcribed and emailed to you (transcription not perfect, sometimes hilariously so)

In conjunction with the Google HANGOUTS app (PC or Smartphone app) you can...

make Calls or send SMS to any US/Canadian number, for free

receive Calls or SMS made to your US Google Voice number, forwarded to hangouts app for free

be notified of missed calls or pending voicemail

(Hangouts app can be used Internationally, anywhere you have quick/stable International Internet access connections)

Google Voice can also use OBI ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter), allowing you to connect a standard home telephone over the Internet with your US-based Google Voice number to make and receive calls to/within the US and Canada for free (where applicable) via your Google Voice service.

I was wondering what it can do in Thailand.

Google Voice is US-centric, meaning its free features are only available for use with US-based numbers.

Google has created a subset service for use in other countries, also named Google Voice, that allows low-rate calling from within gmail app to local numbers withing the same country (service available in select countries, like the UK) but this lite pay-for service doesn't provide fixed call-in numbers for call-back or call-forwarding service.

I don't know of any Google Voice services available to numbers Thailand.

Most people who use the full Google Voice service are people doing business with or have friends/family in the US and Canada.
