Ive just renewed my 1 yr work contract, WP and 1 yr visa at immigration.

I think I want to fly out of LOS for a week to sit on a beach somewhere. When I fly back into thailand with my existing visa is this ok? Do I need to do anything else?

If you really have a valid VISA there will be no problem

Best check exactly what is in the passport because I very much doubt a "VISA" was obtained from immigration

You apparently have an extension of stay based upon working (it is not a visa).

You need a re-entry permit to keep your extension valid. A single re-entry permit costs 1000 baht and a multiple 3800 baht.

You have an extension of stay. If leaving you need to get a re-entry permit from immigration before you leave. Failure to do that means an expensive process of getting new work permit and visa from scratch.

You almost certainly did not renew your visa at immigration, what you did is probably to get a new one year extension at immigration...... visa are not renewed at immigration what you actually get is a one year extension.

You need to get a entry permit at immigration or at the airport before you leave Thailand.

The reentry permit allows you to leave Thailand for a short period and return without canceling your one year extension when you leave Thailand.

Otherwise when you return you may be shocked to find that as you left Thailand your new one year extension was canceled as you exited Thailand, and without that reentry permit you will only get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp on your return.

A single exit re-entry permit will cost you 1000 Baht and will let you exit Thailand and re-enter without canceling your current extension on your exit.

When you re-enter Thailand put your exit re-entry permit number in the space on your arrival card where it asks for "visa number" and write the word reentry near it so the immigration will look for the re-entry permit stamped in your passport when you re-enter Thailand.

Make very sure that when you re-enter Thailand you do NOT get only a 30 day "permitted to stay" stamp at immigration as you re-enter.

You can get a re-entry permit at either airport in Bangkok 24 hours a day.on departure from the country.

You do it after checking in. The re-entry permit desks are in the departure immigration area.

It's not a matter of being pedantic. If he has an extension of stay, he needs a re-entry permit because it is not a visa.

If he did have a multi-entry visa a re-entry permit would not be needed.

There have been numerous threads where someone was moaning because he was under the impression that he had extended his visa, went out of the country and returned only to be given a 30 day visa exempt entry because his extension of stay became invalid absent a re-entry permit.

Visas allow one to enter the country. Visas are never extended. One's permission to stay may be extended under some circumstances. Extensions of stay only permit one to remain in the country, not exit and return. In some cases the distinction may be irrelevant for discussion purposes, but often the distinction has important potential consequences since visas and extension of stay serve different purposes.

Generally, people who think the distinction is unimportant don't understand the difference in the two.

The key to that is right there in what you wrote.

The fact that you had a single entry 90 day visa is in that term single entry which is why you couldn't re-enter without a re-entry permit to allow you to keep the single entry visa valid without the re-entry permit.

If you had a single entry visa you would already have used it when you entered Thailand rendering it no longer valid. Your stay might be valid based on the permission to stay granted on entry (or on subsequent extension of stay) but the visa itself is not.

I accept your opinion and most likely correct , but a few years ago when I changed jobs, came back to Thailand on a single entry B (90 days) and was told not to disappear anywhere out the country as I wouldn't be given a re-entry permit on a single entry and would have to get a new single Non-imm B form Singapore, if I did, and usually our HR department are spot on knowing what you can and cant do

As I wrote a re-entry permit can be issued for any permit to stay. In theory it could even be issued for a visa exempt entry.
