My friend want to send me some spices - things which are expensive in Thailand... will there be massive import duty on things like this? or any problems even getting them in to thailand?

import duty should be 30% of cost of items and postage. Problems I don't think so.

if the package is small and sent per normal post there is also a good chance that nothing will be charged.
