If somebody has only just recently obtained a new education visa (like only one month ago) I thought that Ed Visa holders needed to commit to staying in Thailand for the duration of their study? What is the general rule about being able to leave Thailand for a visit another Asian country for one week regarding non-related activities? Can they do so by obtaining a re-entry permit and do language schools have to be able justify their student leaving to the immigration authorities?

A re-entry permit can be obtained for any permit to stay. It is not any harder to get for one from an ED visa entry or an extension of stay.

Ir an extended stay out of the country was done a person could be question on re-entry or when they applied for their next extension of stay. A week or so should not be a problem.
