Is anyone on here using majority solar power to run the household, lights and other appliances?

Wasn't wanting solar heating for the water though.

If so,how good is it, prices and company used?

Cheers

Quite a few threads in the Electrical forum, so have a look over there for technical stuff.

I'll leave this one here as it is specifically aimed at Phuket installers.

You show an off-grid system (with batteries) is that what you intend or would you go for a grid-tie system?

If you are referring to a stand alone ( off grid ) system , that's fine but you probably need a minimum 5KW system to run general everyday use appliances.

The problem with solar has always been, and it still is .. the initial high cost for purchase and installation with the batteries being a major part of the cost, also battery lifecycle tends to only be around 10-15 years although many advertise 20-30 years.

These two energy sources are often complementary and thus provide a more consistent flow of renewable energy. While the solar PV panels provide power during peak usage hours, wind can provide power throughout the day, and is often strongest when solar energy is not available. In implementing hardware for Pearsala Group mission is to support our product sustainability and associated analog activities it is obvious that NASA flight quality hardware is not required. What is required is that there is a hardware solution that is close enough in its operational parameters so as to be useful for the specific product mission and associated analog activity while being cost effective.

The battery lifespan decrease correlating how warm is the environment. Here in Phuket, batteries lasts less time, than in colder climates. The heat also decreases the power output of the solar cells. It would be great if the solar panel manufacturers would create a combined panel, which would make electricity and heat the home water at the same time. That way the excess heat would cool down the panels and warm the household water.

Some years ago I did quite extensive study of the solar power as I wanted to have a off-grid home. The cost of the batteries was the big issue. That is still an issue, specially as the solar cells prices has dropped quite dramatically over the yeas.

One of the things to consider is how long autonomy the system should have. The companies, which sell the whole systems, like to sell the systems with for example 48 hours autonomy. This means that in case of heavy rains, the system can still offer electricity from the batteries for that time. It also mens loads of batteries and extra solar panels. Much cheaper way to would be to install a automatic diesel generator, which will top up the batteries in case of raniny days.

Amorn has quite wide selection of the reasonably priced solar panels and -systems. http://www.amornsolar.com/

I was looking for a single panel set up for my wife's parents rice farm house. They have another house they live in but spend a lot of time at the farm. They now haul a car battery back and forth to recharge. The above link provided a number of inexpensive alternatives. Thanks.

Is it worth the start up money against the electric bill.

Would be interesting.

It wasn't when I looked into it. I was a ready buyer and asked them to just show me how I could save money and I'd buy, they couldn't show any savings at all. This was a few years ago, so maybe systems can now actually save some money over the long term.

I checked around 5 years ago and it didn't make sense economically. Thailand has some of the lowest electricity

tariffs in the world. About 1/2 that of UK and USA.

i would compare prices directly from China via Alibaba or Aliexpress. I usually find the Thai importers just double or triple the Chinese cost and provide very little service.

i have a 5kw solar system in the house i'm in now (in Colorado, so different situation) but it does work well, but here you don't need batteries, you just sell your excess power back to the grid. unfortunately, Thailand is still in the stone age on environmental technology.
