Community X-ray Room at Nan Hospital Severely Damaged in Floods – High-Value Medical Equipment Lost
Picture courtesy of Matichon. Severe flooding in Nan province has caused significant damage to Nan Hospital, with the X-ray department among the worst-hit areas. High-value medical equipment has been left heavily damaged, prompting appeals for public donations to support recovery efforts. The situation remains critical in parts of Mueang Nan Municipality and surrounding areas following prolonged rainfall. On the morning of 26 July, Nan Governor Chainanong Wongyai posted on his personal Facebook page that water levels at the Nakhon Nan Pattana Bridge, adjacent to the hospital, had begun to recede. Authorities from the Department of Rural Roads were clearing debris from the bridge in preparation for reopening. However, some areas, particularly in Phu Phiang District, remain flooded. Images shared by the popular medical Facebook page Mor Lab Pandarevealed the extent of the destruction inside Nan Hospital’s X-ray room. Floodwaters over one metre deep inundated the facility for more than 40 hours, submerging and displacing hospital beds, chairs and medical equipment. Many items were found jammed against doors and corners throughout the building. Staff were finally able to enter the hospital on the morning of 26 July, to begin preliminary cleaning and damage assessments. However, full operations cannot resume until a thorough inspection of the building’s structure and medical equipment has been completed. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists and hospital staff continue working tirelessly under difficult conditions to ensure ongoing treatment for patients. In response to the emergency, five deceased bodies previously held at the hospital were temporarily relocated to Wat Satharas for safety reasons due to the inundation. While the total cost of the damage is yet to be calculated, it is believed to be substantial. The high-tech X-ray machinery alone represents a major financial loss. Mor Lab Panda urged the public to support the hospital during this crisis, posting: “It brings tears to my eyes seeing the X-ray room like this. Every piece of equipment is extremely expensive. If anyone is able to contribute, even a small amount, please consider donating to help Nan Hospital recover.” Authorities are continuing to monitor the flood situation and will conduct further assessments once water levels fully subside. Flames and thick black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from several kilometres away, sparking fears of a potential explosion. Witnesses described the smoke column as towering as high as a twenty-storey building. Local authorities, including fire crews from Laem Chabang City Municipality, Chao Phraya Surasak Municipality and Si Racha Town Municipality, were joined by over 20 fire engines from surrounding areas in an intense effort to bring the fire under control. Volunteers from the Eastern Firefighter Association also participated. Officials confirmed that the blaze had been successfully contained. No injuries or fatalities were reported at the scene. Emergency crews and staff, are now in the process of assessing the full extent of the damage. According to initial eyewitness accounts from workers at the depot, the fire was preceded by a loud explosion. One worker stated, “We heard a loud bang from the oil depot, and when we turned around, we saw flames. We tried to use chemical extinguishers but the fire spread too fast. Then there were more explosions, and we had to run for our lives.” Police and forensic investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the incident, with a detailed examination to follow. A rare and protected black panther was spotted in the wild at Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi, delighting park rangers and tourists alike as it calmly walked along a road and log in the late afternoon sunshine. Mr. Mongkhon Chaipakdee, Head of Kaeng Krachan National Park, shared images and details of the encounter that took place on the evening of 25 July. The sighting occurred at kilometre 22 on the road leading up to Phanoen Thung, a popular mountain viewpoint within the park. The black panther was first seen by Mr. Busakorn Kantuk, a national park ranger, while he was clearing fallen branches along the route. To his amazement, the elusive creature emerged from the forest and appeared completely relaxed as it wandered through the area. At one point, it climbed onto a large log and stood there proudly, offering a rare and breathtaking sight for those fortunate enough to witness it. Observers noted that the panther displayed no signs of fear or agitation, moving gracefully and confidently within its natural habitat, which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex. Park officials reminded the public and visitors to treat all wildlife with respect and caution. Mr. Mongkhon urged tourists to keep a safe distance if they encounter wild animals, especially predators such as panthers. He advised visitors to remain inside their vehicles, avoid loud noises and strictly refrain from feeding any wild animals. “Feeding wildlife may cause them to associate humans with food, potentially leading to dangerous behavioural changes,” he warned. The sighting serves as a reassuring sign of biodiversity within the park and highlights the importance of ongoing conservation efforts to protect precious and endangered species.
