British Embassy Appointment

I read somewhere that you can no longer just turn up at the embassy and see someone but must make an appointment on line. I can't find the notification so is it true and how do I make the appointment? Sorry if this seems dumb but have searched for the answer with no luck.

I just need a letter from them confirming my residential address.
