Chulalongkorn University's Transportation Institute holds seminar on logistics competitiveness in Tak

TAK, 14 July 2015 (NNT) - Chulalongkorn University's Transportation Institute has organized a seminar on increasing Thailand's logistics competitiveness in Tak province.

Dr. Chackrit Duangphastra, Director of Chulalongkorn University's Transportation Institute, presented research findings to both public and private sector attendees in Tak province. The research dealt with ways to boost competitiveness via regulatory measures concerning trade, logistics, and basic trade foundations.

Two projects would be developed to cater to economic integration, logistics agreements and international trade. The first project involves studying trade and logistics regulations; agricultural and industrial practices that impede border trade; and goods that make up border trade.

The second project involves studying the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZ). In the past, Thailand and ASEAN member nations have neglected trade and logistics regulations, which affect transportation costs for SEZs, industrial estates, tax-free zones, and border trade zones.

Dr. Chackrit claimed that improving logistics remains one of the major national agendas that must be constantly pursued if Thai businesses are to maintain their competitive edge. He added that logistics development should be focused on adding value and making the most of basic resources.

Through this strategy, Thailand could penetrate more foreign markets and be included as part of the Regional Supply Chain. To achieve such a goal, environmental factors that support businesses or lower risks for them are vital to determining Thailand's competitiveness in the regional market.

Ex-ASEAN chief urges Thailand to boost confidence of int’l community in its fishery sector

BANGKOK, 14 July 2015 (NNT) - Former Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr. Surin Pitsuwan has suggested that the Thai government needs to make foreign countries confident that there is no violation to the human rights in the Thai fishery sector.

Dr. Surin on Tuesday said there were more than 80,000 illegal fishing boats in Thailand but less than half of them were registered with the government. It was therefore difficult to track and control them, resulting in the allegations of human rights violation and fishing methods which destroyed natural resources, said the ex-ASEAN chief.

Dr. Surin further suggested Thailand develop its fishing industry in a sustainable manner while enhancing transparency and combating the use of illegal workers in the sector.

Officials rush to tackle drought in provinces across Thailand

BANGKOK, 14 July 2015 (NNT) - Many provinces across Thailand are in the grip of devastating drought as officials install water pumps, and ration water to tackle the crisis.

Chiang Mai’s Maekwuang Udomthara Dam is experiencing the lowest water level it has recorded in the past 21 years. As water dried up, sand dunes and dead shellfish appeared near the bottom of the dam. Only 7 percent of water capacity remains in the dam. The limited water supply is expected to last only 15 more days.

In Uthai Thani, a construction project for new water pumps is being carried out to try and sustainably overcome the drought issue. The project is set to finish early next year.

Two large water pumps have been installed in Saraburi’s Nong Khae to divert water from Rapeepat canal to reach communities in the area. Residents are urged to continue to conserve water as the supply will only last around two weeks.

People in Nakhon Ratchasima meanwhile rushed to catch shellfish that were beached near dried up canals. Officials warned residents to refrain from over fishing in the area to prevent certain species from becoming extinct.
