can anyone recomend reasonable quality "bungalows" in the 500 baht range a night where there is a pool as well. Preferably somewhere quietish?

Try the Kata Villa opposite The Ruam Thep Inn on the southern end of Karon beach. They have a pool. Also the Ruam Thep Inn with their location right on the beach have very reasonably priced rooms. Try bargain with Khun Mui. She is the boss - just smle a lot!
