I have three Western Digital external hard drives. All of them use mini USB cables. Two of them do not require external power, but they only work when they are connected to the USB cables that came from WD. I have lots of USB cables around but none of them can run these drives. This is a problem because I am down to just one original cable and it is one of those little short ones.

There must be something different about these WD cables, but I can't figure it out. I would get a couple of new ones if I could find out what to look for.

Advice?

Model of the USB drives?

USB 3.0 to Micro B cable

The Internet is ripe with similar reports of issues with longer replacement cables.

Something about "the WD USB transceiver they use; it seems like the one from WD is horrible and won't handle additional noise / attenuation of a longer cable".

You can purchase replacements from the Western Digital online store.

Try using some short USB 2.0 cables.

If the drive lights up but doesn't run it may be it's just not receiving adequate current over the replacement cable.

You may need to use a USB Y-adapter so ore current gets to the drive.

I have used extension cable with an usb male with a female usb end that i have plugged the WD cable into successfully. Probably a more versatile and cheaper way to extend your cables. I can't think of the correct terms but everybody should know the difference between an male and a female thingy .facepalm.gif
