Thailand to apply for free trade zone with EEU by 2016 - minister

BANGKOK: -- Thailand has confirmed it’s interested in creating a free trade zone with the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and is expected to submit an application by the year end, according to Russian Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov.

"We are waiting for a final application from our colleagues, which should be sent to the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), so that the Russian Federation could take part in the concrete discussions," Manturov told reporters Wednesday after a meeting of the joint Russian-Thai commission on bilateral cooperation. He said there could be separate decisions on "sensitive areas" like the car industry which were reached during the deal with Vietnam.

Everything depends on the readiness of Thailand, which has already confirmed its interest and is working on the final format of the agreement, according to the minister.

And another big step further away from the "west, the EU and the US.

This will go down well with China and the US.

I suppose even despots need friends.

Who is a despot?

What do you mean?

I guess no problem with China......Thanks to Obama China and Russia are good friends now.

With Thailand's appalling record regarding human trafficking and illegal fishing practices it's not surprising they are looking towards Russia. Their (Russia's) fishing practices leave much to be desired, and as for human rights - I wouldn't like to be a gay in that country.

Lets Thailand send 200 times over EU limit for pesticides Thai pineapples to Putin,it will lower its testosterone level. clap2.gif

What's the problem. It's a free trade agreement. Countries try for the best deals for their manufacturing and export bases.

A mini version of the old Soviet Union plus Thailand. Makes sense to me!

And how big step is America taking away from EU & the west------ oh wow look at that seems China is number 1 for the USA, that's OK as long as Thailand doesn't do it---because then they really will be despots ...bad people .....etc...etc

America is now getting closer with Communist Cuba ----they are putting together a deal where trade will be flowing again with Iran........ can you imagine how the Thai Haters on here would react if Thailand dare do anything like that.

Trying to find independent sources to expand your export market---& not solely relaying on the west----------Wow that's really terrible.

Trade is trade no matter what the level may be.Going back many a years our local village shop owner had problems with one family or rather on of its members.

Yet the shopkeeper always served the family and the problem person if they went to the shop. Her reasoning being that trade equals income, income equals a means to live.

Are you aware of the old Thai adage here below?

''Do not die to spite the graveyard.''
