Sama-ae Thanam, a former insurgent leader recently released from prison, receives a national ID Card at the Panare District Office in Pattani, 20 July 2015.

PATTANI — Thai authorities say they have found the bodies of two suspected separatists who escaped a raid conducted by police and soldiers in Pattani province yesterday.

The officers raided a riverside house in Nong Chik district early yesterday morning. After a gunfight, police said they arrested one man but were unable to catch two others who fled the scene.

Local residents alerted police at around 6.30 pm that two dead bodies were caught in a fisherman's net in the river, said Pol.Col. Chamlong Suwalak, the superintendent of Nong Chik Police Station.

The deceased were identified as Muhammad Seeteelah, 35, and Muhammad Posi Samah, 36, and both bodies bore gunshot wounds.

According to authorities, both Muhammad and Muhammad Posi were wanted for assisting the ongoing insurgency in the Muslim-majority region, known as the Deep South. The men were allegedly behind several deadly attacks on Buddhist civilians, including a fatal shooting of a public school teacher in January 2008.

Police said Muhammad was wanted on four arrest warrants, and Muhammad Posi, allegedly a high-ranking operative and bomb-maker, was wanted on one arrest warrant.

Bingo!

Despite movies where guys swim 300m underwater while being shot at, I get the feeling that these 2 might not have made it. Sob, so sad. Trying to swim away from men armed with M-16s, even in half light is unlikely to be successful. You don't call divers to search the riverbanks.

Shooting "sitting ducks" is rather unsporting, but Thais don't seem to grasp the western concept of sportsmanship very well.

The accompanied Photograph shows a former separatist with his new THAI ID card.........and he seems might proud about it.

Congratulations Mr X, but before I forget......just one question, why did you fight for a separate south in the first place???????

RIP to ALL humans lost and losing their lives in this utterly unnecessary conflict!

You really missed the point altogether. Thailand annexed the far south, just grabbed the land in the early 20th century, and a large number of the natives still do not have Thai ID cards. They are captive citizens. That's why there are separatists. To keep the conflict going, Thailand keeps trying to push Buddhist ideology in the classrooms, ensuring lots of money for the government defense funds. Every teacher that has been killed was a Buddhist in Muslim territory, with only one exception in ten years.

This is exactly the same situation in Myanmar and the Rohingya -- annexed land, disenfranchised and stateless captive citizens.

Same same, but different....
