CHIANG MAI: -- A new Myanmar consulate was officially opened in Chiang Mai on Wednesday, with Myanmar's foreign minister Wunna Maung Lwin and ambassador to Thailand Win Maung in attendance, The Irrawaddy reported.

Thai Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapagorn, along with other foreign diplomats, were present at the opening ceremony.

Win Maung said in fact the Myanmar consulate in northern Thailand was opened between 1960-76, but had been shuttered for almost four decades.

The ambassador said the reopening of the consulate comes as bilateral relations between Thailand and Myanmar are at their best in 2015.

The consulate’s tasks will be the same as the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok, including the handling of visa and passports and migrant workers.

Kaung San Lwin, the new consul-general, will begin his work when the Thai government provides official acknowledgement of the consulate next month, Win Maung said.

Over 2 million Myanmar migrant workers are believed to reside in Thailand, the vast majority toiling in labour-intensive and often unsafe work environments without official identity or work documents. The newly opened consulate will in part focus on migrant affairs.

Typical...

To most the goal in life is to be a success.

Thai's are taught for years in school ..... listen ..... don't ask questions....

Learning what you're taught leads to success...

ergo..... most reporters are a success .... as must be their editors.....

So I wonder when the question will be asked..... why don't you read our paper any longer ???? ps It won't be asked.

Where?

According to Chiang Mai CityNews, the consulate is located at located at 9/4, Hassadhisawee road, Muang Chiang Mai district. That road, for those that might not know, is the road that goes north or slightly northeast starting at the northwest corner of the moat (where Huay Gaew starts). As to whether the consulate is before or after Wat Santitham, heck if I know.
