Two women face obscenity charge for dance in temple
THE SUNDAY NATION

BANGKOK: -- Two women, who were captured in a video clip dancing provocatively in skimpy red dresses at Ayutthaya's Wat Chaiwatthanaram, surrendered to police yesterday and apologised for their behaviour.

Provincial Police Bureau Region 2 commissioner Sanit Mahathavorn said the duo will be charged with obscene and offensive behaviour at a religious and cultural site. They could face up to a month in prison and Bt10,000 in fines. The pair will be granted bail but have to report to court tomorrow, after which police will escort them to the temple to perform an apology ritual. Sanit noted that anyone else found involved would also be punished.

Models Thannicha Nampanya, 27, and Nithikan Chotithanapongsathit, 30, told reporters they went to Ayutthaya for a photo shoot on June 12 in exchange for Bt10,000. Nithikan said they visited the temple late in the afternoon for more photos, and while the crew was packing up they decided to dance for fun and recorded the clip on her personal phone.

She said she did not send the clip to anybody, but stored it in certain applications, before it "went viral" on the Net. They said their employer had nothing to do with their action.

Oh dear we're in the spotlight ! Is that called publicity, will it help our careers ?

Believe it or not the BIB actually went to the temple with the women and RE-CONSTRUCTED the ' crime '. cheesy.gif Impossible to make this nonsense up.

Re-constructed ? Actually that was not the way I read it -

"The pair will be granted bail but have to report to court tomorrow, after which police will escort them to the temple to perform an apology ritual."

I doubt if an apology ritual includes dancing around the temple in "skimpy red dresses". biggrin.png

Climb off your Leo stool and read some Thai newspapers or the other English language Bangkok paper. They were escorted back to the temple for an reenactment of their crime, all but this time wearing more appropriate clothing.

I was not aware of the re-enactment as I was going by what I read in the OP.

I can now understand the comment by NKK, you really can't make this stuff up. Apologies for my earlier comment.

And sorry to disappoint you phutty, but I don't drink Leo or sit on a stool. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Seems pretty harmless to me. This trend of cultural oversensitivity caused completely by overuse of social media is most disturbing.

Pilot ep. for a new show: "Thailand Can't dance"

I'm not sure that I've seen less coordinated women (are they both women?) dancing.

Meanwhile, over on the main stage at the temple festival we have totally hot Coyote dancers. rolleyes.gif

The BP Post showed a photo of BIB officers and the ladies walking through the temple and the story said they conducted a re-construction

Sorry to seem slow but I posted without realising it had already been explained.

First if all that was not lewd and it was barely dancing. Why is this clip getting them in trouble but no one is in trouble for the photo shoot? They were wearing the same dresses no? So there weren't any sexy photos in the shoot at all right??

I should have known there would be a re-enactment of the "crime", the Thai BIB seem to be infatuated with the practice.

Imagine how many crimes would be solved if they stopped the stupid re-enactment charade and concentrated on actual police work instead.

Obscenity???

It is not even titilating, really just lame.

And the point about dancing at Temple Fairs is quite fair.

Absolutely nothing here that doesn't happen day in and day out,

every week, across all of Thailand on temple grounds.

With the obvious amount of truly prosecutable crap you can see daily,

it seems more than slightly disingenuous for the police to even bother

with this light weight attempt at publicity. You been played.

Or worse played yourself.

Hey Police Chief, get a life!

This is one of the many peeves I have with the BIB as I have had experience of re-constructions and they were done selectively in major investigations and for very good reasons.

I can only think the BIB have never got over the novelty from when they first found out about them and think the publicity generated by the media makes them look good and being seen to be on top of things.

Re-constructing two women dancing, irrespective of the location, defies description. What was so difficult or confusing about the ' crime ' that they needed to have it explained to them in this way ?

Maybe good old fashioned voyeurism. gigglem.gif

Crime "reconstructions" are in fact fictionalised pictorial portrayals of a crime which satisfy the police's needs very nicely whilst the whole process remains tightly under their control. In the format used in Thailand, they have no place in any fair justice system.

This whole episode is the police and the tremendous weight of the power of the state conducting some heavy slut-shaming. It is pretty ugly behaviour parading them in front of the press. Pathetic really. I would not be surprised in the slightest if they were coerced into sex with a senior officer to make it all go away.

Yes it was obscene. Obscenely bad. And, whether they admit it or not, the planned to do it. Why else visit a temple in high heels and scanty red dresses. If you have see the episode of Seinfeld with Elaine dancing, this was worse.
