Thai History - Chulalongkorn to WWII

Featured Replies

I would like to read a good book about Thailand, particularly regarding its dealings with Great Britain and France, in the title era.

Has to be in English. Any hints about stockists also welcome.

What he says, it's not allowed in Thailand.

(or on this forum for that matter)

For a comprehensive look at Thai history in a regional context, the classic is: A History of South-East Asia, by D.G.E.Hall. First published in 1955, it has gone through many editions and has never been out of print, nor has it ever been surpassed as a general history of Thailand and the neighbouring countries.

The English presence has been well documented by M.L.Manich Jumsai in his book: History of Anglo-Thai Relations, [Chalermnit 2000].

Oxford in Asia; Silkworm; and White Lotus have reprinted many primary sources that may be of interest to you.

There is no shortage of good books on Thai history.

A History of Thailand 3rd Edition
by Chris Baker (Author), Pasuk Phongpaichit (Author)
Covers the period cited and mentions relationships with Great Britain and France. Otherwise, a general history of Thailand focusing on 20th century.
