28 businesses could be removed in it is found they are encroaching on public land in Bangla Rd.

PHUKET: -- A committee which was set up to look into land encroachment on Patongʼs Bangla Rd say it is possible that 28 businesses could be removed if their title deeds are found to be invalid.

The announcement came at a meeting held by Phuket Vice Governor Suthee Thongyam at Provincial Hall yesterday (August 26), which was also attended by Prajiad Aksornthammakul, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Office; Kathu District Chief, Sayan Chanachaiwong; Mayor of Patong, Chalermluck Kepsap and other officials.

The committee, led by Ms Chalermluck are currently investigating whether the land in question is in fact encroached following a claim by the Land Department that it is public land.

“Today the committee will go through all land documents for an area covering one rai-one gnan. According to the Land Department this area is public land and they have land documents to prove this,” said V/Gov Suthee.

The Phuket Provincial office set up the committee to investigate the matters after officials surveyed the area and found that there are 28 people with claims to the land. So far 17 of them have come forward to the Kathu District Office with land titles.

For over 20years it's been talked about that the bars/business's on the south side of Bangla have been operated on government land and the leases being of a dubious nature. I'm surprised that it's taken so long for the authorities to start checking in to the legalities of the leasing of these properties.

I'm not too sure, and it may be a pure coincidence, but it would appear that these (possibly) 'shady' leases were being managed during the leadership of the Patong administrative offices during (approximately) the same period.

Last year in Khon Kaen it was pointed out that every building in one of the main streets, same street as the Pullman Hotel, had encroached into the street years ago. Quite a few of the buildings are owned by the most powerful family up here.

More tea money was not an option, it was go back to the original plans, i.e knock down the encroached part of the building or we will do it !

It is the military in charge, may have been different had the police been in control, but everyone did as they were told.
