How to get a cheap ticket to Shanghai? And why are they so expensive?

Featured Replies

I want to visit Shanghai and maybe Seoul as well. I've just discovered that the tickets from Bangkok and KL to Shangai are pretty expensive, the average price $150, whereas to Seoul is about $80, against all the odds. It should be exactly the opposite because Seoul is more far and has a lesser population. Moreover, the tickets Shanghai - Seoul or vise versa also cost around $120, whereas the flight takes around 2 hours.

So to recap:

Thailand/Malaysia - Shanghai - $150 (4 hours)

Thailand/Malaysia - Seoul - $80 (6 hours)

Shanghai - Seoul - $120 (2 hours)

The question is, how to get to Shanghai as cheap as possible?

Honestly now, 150 usd for a return ticket to shangai is cheap. Is it a joke? Taking a bus to shangai will no doubt be more expensive

One way ticket.

I'd charge you $150 just to use my toilet. You're kidding, right? $150 to fly four hours to Shanghai is too much?

yes and I've described why.

You have found the cheap fares already. Another option would be to price a ticket with China Eastern to Seoul. It fly's via Shanghai and you can make a stopover there. Or Korean Airlines, Asiana to Shanghai with a stopover in Seoul on one the legs.

If $150 seems like a lot of cash what will you do when you get to Korea and China and $$$ need to be spent on hotels and food. Chinese Visa fee $ etc.

Not $150 itself is a lot of money, but $150 for 4 hours compared to $80 to 6 hours.

As was said, Shanghai - Seoul is about $150. I haven't found anything significantly cheaper.

Try China Eastern BKK- to Seoul. The flight routes via Shanghai. You stop in Shanghai on the way out or on the way back whichever works out best. The Korean version is BKK to Shanghai which flys via Seoul. You make a stop in Seoul on one the legs.

Free 72 hr visa free stopover available in Shanghai as well, so no visa fees. IMO 72 hrs is enough time to see a lot of the city.

Do you mean for 1-3 days? 2 different tickets for one way (Bkk - Shanghai, Shanghai - Seoul)? I guess the overall price will be the same.

I mean an all in one return ticket with a stopover in the hub city. Any of the airlines China Eastern, Korean or Asiana can do your whole trip on one single ticket complete with meals and baggage allowance. It might work out better?

how long does a stopover last?

You need a travel agent.

$150 Shanghai, that's a deal.

$80 to Seoul, that's a loss leader.

Can you be mine?
