Hi,

I am looking into getting an ED Visa but I have literally 0 knowledge on the procedure of getting this.

There are many questions I have to ask, but if someone could help me with a simple step by step guide to get the ball rolling that would be great.

I've been given different answers as to whether you actually have to attend classes or not (please don't ask me why I say this) or the amount of time you need to attend per week, does it differ from school to school?

Looking forward to some good honest, genuine advice! Thank you for your time in advance!

You will need to enroll with a school.

The school once you have have paid their fees will supply paperwork in support of an application you will need to make at a Thai Embassy/Consulate for the visa. Within the region you can only expect to receive a single entry visa which will provide a 90 day entry. You will then be dependent on receiving extensions of stay from immigration which will be dependent on you attending lessons and more paperwork supplied by the school.

Yes you have to attend classes. The authorities are checking up on people with ED visas to make sure they're not just using them to stay in the country for other reasons.

The minimum hours are 8 hours a week. 2 hours a day 4 days a week seems to be the standard, but you should check with the school you're planning to study at.

Experienced ED visa here.

First you need to tell me if you are in Bangkok or not.

Are you enrolling a private language school or university?

If your are in BKK, going private, unless you register in one of the only 2 schools allowed to deliver 3 months extension, you will have visa problems and I strongly advise against ED visa all together.

If you are not in BKK, it's a different story/ going to university

Hey Kisune, thanks for the reply.

Yes I am in Bangkok.

Im not sure about private or university this is my first time looking into this.

So you are saying private schools don't support the 3 month extensions? Only the 2 special ones you mention?

If that's the case could I have the names of these 2 places. I really will need the full year, anything less is not possible for me.

Any other information would be greatly appreciated my friend!

OP. Are you really seeking to attend school for genuine reason or are you casting around for a means of staying in Thailand?

Sorry to be blunt but if you are not committed to attending classes you will experience difficulty with obtaining extensions.

You never had an ED visa let alone went to BKK immigration for ED visa extension, so please dont pollute the thread with your non sense.

I think you will find that Immigration decides who gets what extension, not the school. :-)

I think ONCEARUGGE has very valid question. OP, sounds on surface only that what is more important to you is to stay in thailand 12 months. Perhaps there are better options than Ed visa. You can obtain tourist visas with 2 or 3 entries. Visa exempt stamps etc. Prob less hassle and cost to an ed visa.

Really you ask if you need to attend class .

It is quite easy to remain in thailand legally and play by the rules

That's what I'm saying : BKK immigration has made a list of schools for immigration officers to use, that list show which school gets what extension.

according to the "agreement" they have. And as to Aug 15 only 2 BKK schools are allocated 3 months.

Think this is going off track here.

I am living here with my daughter.

Yes I'm fully committed to learning the English language but 2 hours 4 times a week might be a bit much (do NOT question this, my life)

I would like to stay well clear from tourist visas, im currently on Non-O dependant but only getting 3 months and 2 extension and back to laos/korat its driving my crazy, cant get a year as im not married and yet to get the confirmation letter im a father here (as she was born in England with English birth certificate)

So all schools have a chance for 3 month extension or is kitsune correct in that only 2 can do now?

Seriously dont bother with them.

You are asking people who never ever set a foot in a language school, let alone dealt with ED visa immigration officers, and yet have very precise opinion about every visa question. Students here are so discouraged to write anything, that they dont bother to post anymore.

As you can see, here you are considered a visa abuser just because you want to apply for ED visa.

But please dont just take my word for it, do your own search and ask other students in schools, as I said things are changing fast in ED visa world, what was true last month, might have changed.

One guy in Pattaya reported that now you can get 3 months again by going to immigration twice (one time to pay and get 15 days, the second time to get the remaining 75 days once theyve been to your school and checked your attendance) Pattaya was the first one to go bad and seems to be the 1st one to improve, so there might be hope.smile.png

The OP wants to learn English, not Thai. That could make a big difference to his choice of schools and extensions.

F********** LOL I meant Thai hahahaha sorry was a bit early in the morning. Wow how retarded. Thanks for the replies anyway guys.

No matter. Studying Thai or English using an ED visa will still involve 2hours/day 4 days/week.

It is, of course, possible to study at your own pace using a tourist visa.
