Two Karen refugees killed in gun attack at Mae Hong Son holding centre



MAE HONG SON: -- Two Karen refugees died and three others were injured when gunshots were fired into a refugee holding centre in Tambon Pang Moo of Muang district of Mae Hong Son on Sunday night.

The Karen Daeng refugees were holding “Poi Khao Tom” traditional ceremony last night when several gunshots were fired into the holding centre.

Two men, one was identified as Pae Rae, 17, and another Sae Rae, 40, were hit on their chests and died at Zone 13 of the centre.

Three others were also injured by gunshots and were later admitted to Sri Sangwal hospital for treatment.

The motive of the firing was not immediately known but police suspected a conflict between two groups of teenagers residing at Zone 12 and Zone 13 might be a cause.

The holding centre is now aided by officials of the International Rescue Committee.

This is Thailand and you are surprised that guns are everywhere available, especially in conflict border areas?!? Perhaps you need to read A. Pasuk's Guns, Girls, Gambling, Ganja: Thailand's Illegal Economy and Public Policy.
