PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – As Cambodia celebrates achieving its Millennium Development Goal of gender equality in primary education, it continues to lag far behind in another important marker of women’s rights – equal Internet access.

The number of Internet users in the country has surged from 320,190 in 2010 to 6,264,902 in 2015, but many women have been left behind by the Internet boom. As of last month just 38 percent of the country’s Facebook users were female, according to data collected by media analytics firm IMS Consulting Group. Women are much better represented on the social network elsewhere, accounting for 46 percent of Facebook’s users globally.

Analysts say that the gap is due to traditional gender roles that prevent Cambodian women from going online.
