Check out iFixit.

Here's a link for one particular model : https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2014+SSD+Replacement/27849

You'll need to find the instructions for your particular model as they have made some very significant changes over the years.

In general, it's one of the easiest things to do for the notoriously difficult to upgrade Apple products.

There are very few options for a replacement HDD, you'll need to either get an original from eBay/Taobao etc.. or buy one from http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC .

These are the only two options I'm aware of, there might be a handful more.

I'll just jump into this thread as I'm also interested in upgrading my early 2011/13" mbpro with SSD & bumping the ram up to 8gb.

Here is the guide to changing the RAM. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Early+2011+RAM+Replacement/5117

I have done the RAM from the initial 4 GB in my Mac up to the 16 GB max in it.

To install the SSD and copy everything over from the original drive to the SSD, a good software to use is Carbon Copy Clone. You would mount the new SSD into something like this http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-BlacX-eSATA-Docking-Station/dp/B001A4HAFS (there are other ways to do it, with adapters that use cables and power supply, but this is the most esthetically pleasing and makes a great docking station for your old drive to use as a backup / extra HD).

While you are changing the RAM, the HD is just a few screws to remove the HD retention bar, detach the eSata cable, and swap the new SSD in. You will have to transfer the screws on the outside of the drive you are removing to the outside of the SSD (you will see - they are obvious).

If you want to remove your optical drive, and move your old drive into that space, there are devices to mount the drives in (search google for "OWC data doubler"). They come with instructions on how to do the swap.
