KUALA LUMPUR: -- Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi Thursday signed the Kuala Lumpur Declaration in Combating Transnational Crime together with other Asean leaders at the Asean Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), reported New Straits Times.

The historical event, which took place at Intercontinental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur marked another milestone in the regional association’s tight cooperation especially in battling criminal activities.

The other Asean leaders who signed the declaration on behalf of their nations were Brunei Energy Minister Datuk Dr Muhammad Yasmin Umar; Cambodia secretary of state Em Sam An; Indonesian police chief General Badrodin Haiti; Laos Public Security Minister Brigadier General Somkeo Sylavong; Myanmar Deputy Home Minister Kyaw Kyaw Tun; Philippines Public Safety Undersecretary Peter Irving C. Corvera; Singapore Second Minister of Home and Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli Masagos Mohamad; Thailand Deputy Interior Minister Sutee Markboon; and, Vietnam Public Security Minister Tran Dai Quang.

The declaration highlights the emergence of new forms of transnational crimes. This includes the call for the formulation of a new Asean Plan of Actions to Combat Transnational Crime, since the previous plan was adopted in 2002.

It is learnt that the declaration also highlights the commitment of Asean members to address terrorism menace, endorsement of the Asean Convention on Trafficking in Persons and the endorsement of Asean Plan of Action against Trafficking in Persons especially Women and Children.

On my trip to Nong Khai, I finally saw a crappy old sign, tucked away in a train station urging Thais to prepare for this Asean thing... Im sure they will get around to it when its too late, then bitch about it like slags in a pub
