October 3, 201510 yr Farmers told not to grow off season rice BANGKOK: -- Farmers in the Central Plains close to Bangkok are warned not to plant off season rice during the dry season, starting from November, as the storing water won't be sufficient for second crop farming, according to the Royal Irrigation Department. Royal Irrigation Department’s deputy director general Suthep Noipairoj issued the warning during his visit to Bangkok’s suburban areas to meet rice farmers recently. He said rice farmers must refrain from planting their crops as this year’s drought was the worst that Thailand had experienced in five years. He said from November 1 this year water will be managed to meet the demand for public consumption only due to a prolonged drought.Release of water for farming in dry season, which lasts for six months, could cause severe water shortage for household consumption, he said. However rice farmers along the irrigation canal insisted to plant their crop, while those who live farther away from the irrigation canal are worried that they will be left penniless if they are not allowed to plant their crops during the dry season. October 3, 201510 yr If they still plant their crops just make sure they can't get water. They have been warned and drinking water will always have priority over water for farming in ANY country. The farmers should be compensated but those breaking the rules should get nothing.
October 3, 201510 yr Maybe this will be the first year that farmers comply.. But do not hold your breath
October 3, 201510 yr If they won't stop the burning when ordered, why would they stop this? Can we just cancel songkran? That's a waste of billions of litres every year
October 3, 201510 yr I am not pulling any punches here , if successive Governments had applied themselves to this problem instead of lip service and having Coups , Thailand would have been somewhat well off for water, however as we see through Government failure, they now tell rice farmers not to plant a summer crop who are in the central plains area , not bad, seeing it was the Government's fault in the first place and no mention of compensation , this is critical to these peoples survival , end of story.

This govt can do bugger all about what the ptp did, they are warning the farmers as the water levels are too low, If they want compensation then let them take yl & the ptp to court and hit them up for releasing the water and screwing them all. Blaming this lot is not the answer as they can do nothing about the weather, they have to consider everyone, not just the farmers.
October 3, 201510 yr Can't they use Article 44? Just throw everyone who doesn't comply in jail. That'll teach them.
October 3, 201510 yr I think it time to stop calling them farmers. Seems, none profit rice growers would be a more accurate name.

October 3, 201510 yr Sounds like this coming dry season will be very profitable for loan sharks. And plenty of "suicides".........
October 3, 201510 yr if they got nothing to do up there they might all come down and party in BKK, happened before
October 3, 201510 yr if they got nothing to do up there they might all come down and party in BKK, happened before Save the petrol for travel and burn their own towns down? .
October 4, 201510 yr Farmers plant 2nd crop for money, not pleasure. If they have no 2nd crop, they have no money. How are they going to survive? As chainwhatever said, it is previous administrations fault for not providing an adequate water management system, not the current administration. They are trying to do the best they can with a shitty situation. The governement must make funds available for these unforntunate people so they can survive, there is ample money available now that the submarine fiasco seems to have been put to bed. A an aside, perhaps if they channel all the funds that are being squandered on the single internet gateway project into compensating these rice farmers it would do more for national security that all the vetting of internet traffic would do, after all , starving poor people cause revolutions.

Very useful to enforce lese-majeste law and hunt Thaksin.. mandatory for any corruption cleaning, obvious need for reconciliation plan... Junta will have a big surprise soon if they not hear the grass roots
October 4, 201510 yr if they got nothing to do up there they might all come down and party in BKK, happened before Save the petrol for travel and burn their own towns down? . Sounds like a great idea let them cause trouble back home, or make sure they never get to BKK. (p.s I want the government to help the farmers, giving them some compensation for not growing rice but the government should also punish those that ignore the orders) Drinking water is far more important as rice.

Let them grow it if they're stupid/greedy enough, They will know they should have listened to the experts when there is no drinking water midway through the 2nd crop and they have to pay for expensive bottled water deliveries
October 4, 201510 yr Sounds like this coming dry season will be very profitable for loan sharks. Oh dear... the much paraded Subsistence Sufficiency Economy is not working quite as well as it was designed to do.?? Are people not following the intsructions properly?
