Pheu Thai unveils proposals for the CDC

BANGKOK: -- The Pheu Thai party on Wednesday issued a statement proclaiming its political standpoints and proposals pertaining to the new draft constitution to be written by the Constitution Drafting Committee headed by Mr Meechai Ruchupan.

The party claimed that its proposals and political standpoints were gleaned from the opinions of its party members and supporters.

The party’s proposals and political standpoints are as follows:

* The draft must have clear objectives for democratic rule with the King as the head of state and promotion of sustainable political stability;

* Speeding up the drafting of the new charter to be completed sooner rather than later;

* Public hearings to gauge public opinions of the drat should be held once the CDC starts its drafting process;

* The draft must be concise and straight to the points, easily understandable without interpretation;

* The ten frameworks for the new draft that are stipulated in the interim charter poses an obstacle to the drafting of the new charter and deprives the CDC of its independence in the drafting;

* It should be clearly stated that the 1997 constitution or the 2007 charter should be enforced as an interim charter if the draft fails in the referendum so that there will be an election in 120 days after which a new draft will be written by a new CDC.

You maybe flippant, but 5 of the 6 things pointed in the article are about as concise and important as any proposal i have seen to date from anyone.

Every other proposal to date has been wishy washy high level corporate/political BS.

It is not sustainable to run a country whose leader's sole aim is the persecution of one major political faction, particularly when that political organisation enjoys massive support.

Lack of reconciliation means there will be trouble on the road ahead for Thailand.

Thailand is sadly still a long way short of discovering the concept of " all men are created equal". Still a feudal society where only the rich and privileged have rights. Needs a charismatic figure to break that system, no one visible to the naked eye these days. The very first constitution ( 1932) was modeled on France but not acceptable to the powerful Siamese because of its emphasis on equality.

Plus, no mention:

- of building and maintaining a fair and balance civil society

- of any requirement that all parties must have a very clear manifesto which focuses on equality of opportunity and education etc., for all Thais and must be subject to public debate prior to each election, etc.

- of party platforms must be subject to costing with the results made very public.

- of total respect for the law and equal application of the law.

- of parties operating within ethical standards, etc.

- of parties needing to operate totally outside of any one person or family 'owning' the party.

- of convicted criminals totally prohibited from taking part in Thai politics in any way shape of form either within Thailand or offshore, and those colluding with such persons subject to very severe penalties.

Edited by scorecard

What a quaint post.

Not true.

"its [CDC] independence in the drafting"

DOA

You would hardly expect them to propose a ban on MPs receiving income from 3rd parties (aka bribes). That would be against the founding policy of PTP - take orders from the highest bidder.
