Two loggers accused of killing official surrender

BANGKOK: -- TWO OF three men suspected of killing a forest protection official in the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary in Chaiyaphum this month have surrendered.

Brothers Arthit Klangsin, 31, and Song Klangsin, 38, surrendered at the forest protection unit at Ban Huay Rahong in Khon San district at about 2am yesterday.

The alleged gunman, Boonleng Saithongkhoo, 48, is believed to be hiding in the forest border area between Chaiyaphum and Phetchabun.

Police, military and forestry officials launched a manhunt for the three after Prasit Khummoo, 49, a forestry officer, was gunned down after spotting the suspects as they allegedly tried to illegally fell protected eaglewood (mai kritsana) trees near Ban Huay Rahong on October 14.

Arthit and Song reportedly admitted to trying to fell the trees but denied shooting Boonleng.

Arthit and Song said a man from Sa Kaew ordered them to cut down the trees and they enlisted the help of Arthit to do that.

The brothers were taken to Region 3 Provincial Police headquarters in Nakhon Ratchasima for questioning.
