Cambodia to eliminate road taxes on motorcycles: PM

Featured Replies

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced Thursday that the government will not collect road taxes on motorcycles from 2016 onward in order to improve the livelihoods of the Cambodian people, particularly low-income families.

"The government will eliminate road taxes on motorcycles, three-wheeled, motorized vehicles, agricultural tractors, and small boats from next year onward," he said in a speech during the inauguration ceremony of a China-funded bridge in the capital city of Phnom Penh.

Usually, a motorcycle is required to pay about 5,000 riel (1.23 U.S. dollars) per year on road taxes, he said.

With the elimination, the government will lose around 1.42 million U.S. dollars in tax revenues a year, according to a draft budget law for 2016.
